North East India Geographical Society
I N T R O D U C T I ON
With a view to popularise the discipline geography across the north-eastern region and to promote geography education and research in right direction a voluntary academic organisation with the name North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) was formed in 1968 with headquater in the Department of Geography, Gauhati University. The faculty members of the department in association with many college teachers are engaged in holding of geography conference, extension lecture programme, teachers training programme and environment awareness programme in various colleges and schools of the region under the banner of NEIGS. NEIGS has been bringing out a research journal “NORTH EASTERN GEOGRAPHER” since 1969 and a popular Assamese magazine “BHOUGOLIKA” since 1984. Besides, the NEIGS published a book entitled “An Introduction to Social Geography” in 2005 authored by Prof. M. Taher

- Promoting better standard of teaching geography.
- Fostering research in geography.
- Disseminating geographic information, knowledge and new thoughts.
- Offering suggestions to the government concerned with regard to socio-economic planning and development of the states of North-East India.
H I S T O R Y
The society was born at the time of the Pre-Congress Symposium held on 22-24 November, 1968 in the Department of Geography, Gauhati University on the occasion of 21st International Geographical Union’s Congress held for the first time in India in that year in New-Delhi. being inspired by that seminar attended by some internationally reputed geographers from foreign countries, the faculty members of the Department of Geography, Gauhati University hatched a plan to organise a society under the name and style “North-East India Geographical Society’ abbreviated as NEIGS.
